About Nissa

Nissa began her education in culinary arts due to her love of food, cooking, and the connection that happens around eating. That passion eventually grew into a curiosity about the science of nutrition and the many cultural, socioeconomic, and behavioral factors that influence how we eat. This is what ultimately led her to become a registered dietitian nutritionist. Nissa is passionate about combining her cooking and nutrition skills to help patients make sustainable changes.

Favorite thing to purchase at the Farmer’s Market or Grocery Store: There are too many good options! In the summer, I love picking up fresh herbs, heirloom tomatoes, and rainbow Swiss chard at the farmers market. I’m also always on the lookout for dark roast coffee from local roasters.

Favorite cultural dish or comfort food: My all-time favorite comfort dish is wild mushroom risotto. It was one of the first dishes I learned to prepare on my own, so it’s always felt special to me. I love that it’s simple and comforting, while still feeling elevated.

Go-to morning beverage: Coffee, without fail! At home, I love a standard drip coffee with soy milk and stevia, or an Americano if I’m out.

A habit you swear by: Prioritizing ingredient prep rather than full-blown meal prep. It’s easier, more versatile, and gives you the flexibility to make something you actually feel like eating when mealtime comes around.

Nutrition philosophy in a nutshell: My nutrition philosophy is intentionally simple: don’t overcomplicate it. Take a bird’s-eye view of how you’re eating and focus on one or two small things you can add, like including fruit with breakfast or trying a new whole grain. Those small changes add up over time and can make eating well feel much more manageable and sustainable.

Favorite book/TV show/movie: The Women or The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. Her books quickly turned me into a historical fiction lover, and now it’s one of my favorite genres.

Nutrition myth or trend you find particularly annoying and would like to set the record straight: The idea that organic automatically means healthier. There are plenty of reasons someone may choose organic, but when it comes to nutrition, I’d much rather see someone eating fruits and vegetables they enjoy and can afford than stressing over whether they’re organic.
