About Maria

I became interested in becoming an RD after i graduated from undergrad and was working in a medical practice as a medical assistant. I was seeing many patients coming in with a variety of health concerns and noted that many of their concerns could be addressed and aided by changing their nutrition habits.

I am passionate about helping my patients learn to use nutrition to reach their health and fitness goals with a supportive and science-based approach.

How has your cultural culinary heritage shaped your approach to nutrition, and do you incorporate any traditional practices into your counseling?
Growing up in a Colombian household meant that meals often included arepas, buñuelos, and empanadas. Even though these foods aren’t the most nutrient dense, there’s plenty of room for them in a balanced diet.

I intentionally learn about my patients’ cultures and how they’ve informed their eating habits. It helps me help them incorporate traditional foods into their a mindful diet, rather than removing it, so they can find joy in building new habits while honoring their cultural traditions.

Nutrition philosophy in a nutshell: All foods fit and can be enjoyed.
