About Shyla

Shyla’s interest in nutrition began in high school when she gained a strong interest in plant-based eating patterns. Although she no longer follows a plant-based diet, it was a spring board for her overall passion for nutrition. She is drawn to all things nutrition, wellness, and biochemistry. Additionally, growing up as an Afro Latina, food was always something she learned to appreciate in a variety of ways and has carried that into her work. Before joining the Culina Health team, Shyla worked as an inpatient acute care dietitian at a local hospital.

Get To Know Shyla

Favorite cultural dish or comfort food: Panamanian style Arroz con pollo (rice with chicken)

Favorite thing to purchase at the farmer’s market or grocery store: I always stop at a bakery stand at the farmer’s market for fresh sourdough bread!

Sleep ritual I never forget: Grabbing my sleep eye masks that block all external light!

Fave book/TV show/movie: Favorite movie of all time is the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

What’s one small thing someone can do today to work toward a balanced eating pattern/lifestyle? Focus on how you can diversify your dietary choices. Try browsing the store for a new vegetable or fruit that looks interesting, and pick it up!

What’s your nutrition superpower? I add white beans to my smoothies! People think it’s weird, but it adds protein, creates a thicker texture, and boosts the fiber content.

Nutrition myth or trend you find particularly annoying and would like to set the record straight: The idea that sea moss contains 92 essential minerals is not based in reality. The human body requires only 13. There may be other minerals in sea moss, but they aren’t ones our body can sure, and others could be downright harmful.
