What is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist ? How is it different from a nutritionist or health coach?

Registered Dietitians (RDs) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) are nationally-recognized food and nutrition experts who are uniquely qualified to provide medical nutrition therapy (MNT) for disease prevention, management and for optimal health. Only a registered dietitian nutritionist is accredited and recognized by the US Government to provide nutrition services that are eligible for insurance reimbursement under the current health care laws.

We will contact you with your coverage information so you know what to expect before meeting with your RDN. Please note your benefits are a quote from your insurance company, and we cannot guarantee your benefits or reimbursements. As the policyholder, you are responsible for claims denied by insurance, Medicare, or third-party companies. We will always do our best to explain your policy and advise you on your options.

What if my insurance doesn’t cover my session?

Some insurance plans have a co-insurance, a form of cost-sharing that allows you to split the cost of care between you and your insurance company. Most insurance plans with a co-insurance require you to pay a percentage of the cost of care after you meet your deductible. For example, let's say your health insurance plan's allowed amount for an office visit is $100, and your co-insurance is 20%. If you've paid your deductible, then you would owe 20% of $100 or $20, and your insurance company pays the rest. If you still need to meet your deductible, you pay the full allowed amount.

What if my insurance doesn’t cover my session?

Your "allowed amount" is the maximum your insurance plan will pay for a covered healthcare service. The "allowed amount" is also called an "eligible expense," "payment allowance," or "negotiated rate." You may have to pay the difference if your provider charges more than the plan's allowed amount. We will not know your allowed amount until after your claim is processed.

We need a copy of your insurance card to ensure we contact the correct department for benefits and coverage verification. We also need to ensure we have accurate information regarding your policy (PPO/HMO etc.), pre-authorizations, and referrals.

We bill your co-pay if and when your insurance plan applies it to your claim. This timeframe can range from 1 - 6 weeks after your session. Many plans cover nutrition counseling as a preventative benefit; in this case, your insurance company may not apply a co-pay to your session.

What if my insurance doesn’t cover my session?

A deductible is a part of cost sharing. Covered medical expenses are added to or accumulated toward a deductible over a year and start over the next year. Once a policyholder meets their plan’s deductible, most plan holders typically pay only a copayment or coinsurance for additional covered services up to an out-of-pocket maximum.
