How often should I see a registered dietitian?
Everyone’s timeline looks different when they enter into nutrition care. Factors like past medical history, relationship with food, long-term goals, and your insurance coverage or membership preferences all impact how frequently you should see your registered dietitian.
Most of our patients benefit from:
- Sessions every 1-2 weeks for the first 1-3 months in care.
- Some patients prefer to continue with sessions every 1-2 weeks after 3 months of care, while others may be ready to graduate to sessions every 1-3 months.
- Once you achieve your long term goals, it can be helpful to check in with your RD every 6-12 months.
Your RD will work with you to identify the best cadence to meet your individual needs.
Some special cases that may require a specific timeline include:
- Before your surgery, we require you to complete at least 3 sessions for bariatric surgery clearance.
- After your surgery, we recommend weekly sessions until you are able to consume a soft diet, and you are meeting your nutrition needs consistently. Then, biweekly for at least 3-6 months.
- Once you achieve your long term goals, it can be helpful to check in with your registered dietitian every 6-12 months.
- Gestational Diabetes
- Then, we highly recommend seeing you every 2-3 weeks for the duration of pregnancy.
- Weekly session until signs and symptoms resolve or are well-managed.
- Then, move forward with check-ins as needed.
Many people with GI conditions have other nutrition-related goals including weight loss, working on their relationship with food, or management of other conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Talk to your RD about a proper cadence for managing these goals in tandem with your GI conditions.
- Weekly or biweekly sessions depending on severity of symptoms.
Our Core Values
A Note on Cultural Competency
At Culina Health, we believe that all people deserve access to clinical nutrition support regardless of age, race, income level, cultural background, gender and sexual identity, or ability.
We’re building a team of world-class registered dietitians who acknowledge and respect the diverse backgrounds, traditions, and values that shape each individual’s relationship with food. We know that to achieve sustainable, lasting well-being, your care must fit into your life (and not the other way around).
To ensure that our registered dietitians are equipped to provide affirming care to all patients, we partner with Violet, a platform focused on training healthcare professionals in health equity. Through Violet, our registered dietitians are trained and empowered to deliver culturally competent, highly personalized care to BIPOC, LGBQ, and TGNC communities.
