Jan’s relationship with food began early as an overweight child, struggling for years with restrictive diets and yo-yo weight loss. She decided to become a registered dietitian to learn the science of food and nutrition. Jan’s passion as a dietitian is to help others in their journey towards health and balance. Jan’s expertise spans a variety of conditions, including HIV/AIDS, weight management, digestive disorders, prediabetes and diabetes, heart disease, cancer, kidney and liver disease, and eating disorders.

What’s one small thing someone can do today to work toward a balanced eating pattern/lifestyle? Eat protein within 2 hours of waking up; Sit less, get up and stretch/move your body; Take several full, deep breaths, exhale forcefully.
A habit you swear by: Drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning with Calcium/Magnesium supplement. Eating more vegetables and fruits. Walking up stairs.
What’s your nutrition superpower? Eating red onions in vinegar every day. RECIPE: (1) Thinly slice 1 red onion. (2) Add 2-3 tablespoons red wine vinegar (add a little raw sugar to taste). (3) Pour over red onions, mix well. (4) Cover, put in refrigerator overnight. (5) Enjoy on salads, sandwiches or straight up!
Nutrition philosophy in a nutshell: Food is medicine; Nutritional healing is a marathon, not a sprint; Deprivation never works!
Nutrition myth or trend you find particularly annoying and would like to set the record straight: Intermittent fasting, e.g. not eating in the morning does not produce sustainable weight loss nor energy for life’s challenges.
