Mariam’s interest in nutrition began as a college student, when she benefited from nutrition therapy to help remedy a personal health challenge. As a first generation American and proud foodie, Mariam is an advocate of cultural foods and inclusivity in nutrition practice.
Before joining the team at Culina Health, Mariam worked as an acute care registered dietitian at a metropolitan hospital, providing nutrition education and interventions across many units and disciplines such as cardiac, gastroenterology, high risk pregnancy, and oncology.
Favorite cultural dish or comfort food: Biryani
Favorite thing to purchase at the farmer’s market: Bread! whether it’s a loaf, baguette, croissant, I love all the breads.
Favorite nutrient-packed snack: Hummus with a drizzle of chili oil + crackers and veggies
Favorite book/TV show/movie: All the Korean dramas, particularly Crash Landing on You, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Business Proposal, and Itaewon Class.
What’s one small thing someone can do today to work toward a balanced eating pattern/lifestyle? Add a veggie to each meal. This doesn’t have to be a freshly washed and chopped veg. It can be as simple as popping a bag of frozen prepped veggies into the air fryer, or dumping some frozen broccoli into the rice cooker alongside your rice.
Nutrition myth or trend you find particularly annoying and would like to set the record straight: The carnivore diet! The human body and particularly the brain needs carbs and will synthesize them from protein and fat if not provided in the diet. This is not to mention the sheer necessity of fiber for heart and gastrointestinal health.
