I started working as a nutrition educator for WIC right out of college. At the time I wasn’t sure where I wanted my career to go, but I wanted to work in an environment where I could directly help people. After seeing the impact that nutrition education had on the health of the families I worked with, I wanted to be able to do more. I was lucky to have some amazing dietitians at work that helped me see the role a dietitian plays in different fields, and they supported me in my pursuit to return to school and work towards getting my registration.
Favorite cultural dish or comfort food: Arepas
Go-to morning beverage: Coffee with a splash of milk
Favorite nutrient-packed snack: Avocado toast with Tajin, cherry tomatoes and seeds
Grocery shopping tip: Don’t be afraid of frozen fruit/vegetables
What’s one small thing someone can do today to work toward a balanced eating pattern/lifestyle? One small tweak to our mindset around food can change how we look at our meals. Instead of thinking about what is bad or what you should restrict, focus on what you can add to your plate for added nutrition.
A habit you swear by: I swear by having a huge glass/bottle of water at my desk or anywhere I can see it. It’s easy to go a whole day without drinking anything if you have no reminders near by.
What’s your nutrition superpower? My nutrition superpower is that I am flexible and empathetic. I understand that nutrition/food can be complicated for a variety of reasons. Although the steps to take to improve your health can sometimes be straightforward, I have to give you realistic steps based on where you are.
Nutrition philosophy in a nutshell: My nutrition philosophy is all foods fit! I genuinely believe that besides allergies and certain medical conditions there is room for all foods (fun and nourishing) in most people’s diets. It’s just about finding the balance that works best for your life.
