About Tamara

I decided to become an RD because I loved that we can impact health through what we eat. In my community, this can be impactful. I enjoy sharing that cultural foods can be healthy and affordable. I currently work with families and in the outpatient world, I am able to follow patients as they grow older.

I volunteer in my community providing education sessions to adults and teens. I have mentored RDs coming along behind me. I also volunteer with my state association on the DEI committee and with NASPGHAN (North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition). I try to be an advocate in our field by explaining how a registered dietitian can impact health and educating that not every nutritionist is a registered dietitian.

Grocery shopping tip: Don’t shop hungry!

What’s one small thing someone can do today to work toward a balanced eating pattern/lifestyle? It has been helpful to my family to create a dinner meal list. We are able to plan our meals for the week and create our shopping list based on the meals. It saves us money in the grocery store, skip aisles that may be tempting and helps us to create balanced and healthy meals.

A habit you swear by: Drink water throughout the day. It helps to moderate your diet, keep your hydration and moderate body functions and help to give you beautiful skin. When I’m hydrated, I feel that I not only eat better, but I don’t overeat.

How has your cultural culinary heritage shaped your approach to nutrition, and do you incorporate any traditional practices into your counseling? My heritage helps me to understand that cultural foods are not necessarily unhealthy. There are so many tasty switches my mother made that adopted into how I eat. I enjoy asking clients about their cultural foods, e.g. how they prepare them and what ingredients are involved and then having them brainstorm ways it could be healthier- if necessary.

Nutrition philosophy in a nutshell: The best AND motto that came out is my nutrition philosophy: All Foods Can Fit. I really believe this is true and we don’t have to always feel guilty for what we choose to eat. Learning to have a healthy relationship with food is the key for a healthy future.
